Ten years ago, after years of working within
the Ethiopian community, Anne & David Silverman and Rabbi Yosef & Aida
Miller established the Forgotten People Fund to assist Ethiopian families in
need of assistance.
The name – Forgotten People Fund – was chosen because in
1998 the promises that had been made to the Ethiopian community when they
were brought to Israel in the two special operations launched by the Israeli
government – Operation Moses in 1984/5 and Operation Solomon on May 25, 1991
– had all but been forgotten.
Families were falling apart, children were
receiving substandard education, the community was riddled with dropouts and
serious social problems, and violence within the families was becoming all
too familiar.
The Forgotten People Fund (FPF) was set up as an emergency fund to help
Ethiopian families who had no place else to turn. Anne Silverman,
Chairperson, and David Silverman, Treasurer, launched a series of
fundraising events to bring the plight of the Ethiopian families to the
forefront and to raise fund to provide the necessary assistance for them. Yosef and Aida Miller made contact with the Ethiopian social workers and
community center directors who work with the families throughout Netanya,
and the FPF Outreach Program began its work in all the neighborhoods where
the families live – Vatikim, Nordau, Dora, Azorim, Sela and downtown
Netanya.
