SPECIAL REQUEST FROM MEITAL
Meital Mahari, 14 and a Grade 8 student, wrote the following
letter to FPF asking for assistance for her family and herself:
Dear Friends at FPF,
It is my wish to ask for your help in getting dental treatment for myself. I
have many problems. My mother, who is a single parent, isn’t working. She has
expenses for our small apartment and for school fees for me and my sister Rachel
(18). My oldest sister, Manhal (23), lives with us and her baby. Manhal isn’t
married and isn’t working.
I don’t know how to describe all our problems. Our only income is from social
welfare and that is minimal – just enough to pay the household bills and then
there is very little left for food.
My teeth are in very bad shape and the dentist says I need 10 fillings and a
root canal to start with. The total cost is NIS 2,090 ($510).

Meital is one of many Ethiopian youngsters suffering from serious dental
problems due to poor nutrition. Insufficient nutrition is the result of the
family living below the poverty line. There isn’t enough money to buy the
necessary fruits and vegetables to promote good health. The family survives on
the basics – bread, margarine, potatoes, pasta and rice - which aren’t enough
for a growing child – especially for a teenager. If we don’t help Meital take
care of her teeth, her situation will only worsen. FPF will make certain that
Meital has vitamins to take daily to improve her health. We need the help of
donors to ensure that the family has enough to eat.
