Asmara came to Israel as a teenager with her parents and sisters in 1989. She went a boarding school where she learned to read and write Hebrew. She could not matriculate as she couldn’t catch up on all the years of schooling she had never had. In the tradition of the Jews of Ethiopia, Asmara had been betrothed as a child to Mulu Boocha, and once she finished her studies, a wedding was arranged and Asmara and Mulu were married.
One day, Mulu was repairing a refrigerator and was electrocuted. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. When the news was given to Asmara, she collapsed and, as she puts it: “…my whole world broke into pieces”. Now she was a young widow with two toddlers – aged 3 and 1½ - to raise on her own.
For the first time, Asmara needed help. She needed to learn how to make a claim from Workman’s Compensation for the accidental death of her husband and she need to know how to get help paying her bills now that the family’s breadwinner had passed away. Baruch Teka became the family’s social worker and gave Asmara the guidance she required. He also put her in touch with FPF and we have been there over the years to help Asmara pay school fees and make repairs to her appliances. FPF provides food vouchers for all the holidays and helped to pay for Asmara’s glasses when she learned that she needed them. She had been suffering from headaches until we told her she should have her eyes checked.
Asmara is a great mother and father to her two children. She has begun working for a few hours every day and spends the rest of her time at home, cleaning, cooking, and making sure that the children do their homework. She is proud of the fact that she is now earning money to pay her bills and that she only has to turn to FPF when there is an emergency.
FPF is pleased to have been there to offer Asmara the support she needed when she needed it.
